Is it really discouraged to get a piercing in summer? Let’s clear things up
As we anticipated, getting a new piercing in summer has no contraindications and can be done safely on any part of the body.
However, some key rules must be followed to ensure that the piercing follows the normal healing period and does not risk getting infected or causing irritation.
The first, which is also the most important, is to get the piercing in a certified studio that complies with health authority regulations and meets all the hygiene, safety, and sterilization standards required and mandatory by law.
The piercer who performs it must be experienced and qualified, and must use disposable tools and products (or those sterilized in an autoclave), taken from sealed packages with a visible expiration date and opened only in front of the client before performing the piercing.
Finally, the inserted jewelry must comply with UNI EN 1811 standards and the material must be 100% biocompatible, meaning it does not release nickel into the body.
These are the basics to be sure of getting a perfectly executed piercing done in a highly professional and guaranteed manner.
Below we see the procedures to follow to care for a piercing done during the summer.
Tips on how to care for a newly done piercing in summer
The first rule to follow to prevent infections and facilitate the healing process during the first two weeks is constant and thorough cleaning, which includes:
- not touching the new hole or washing your hands thoroughly before touching the pierced area
- cleaning the piercing at least twice a day with a sterile saline solution
- avoiding touching, rubbing, scratching, or rotating the jewelry constantly
- not putting pressure on the fresh piercing
- not removing the jewelry that was just inserted
- not using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or betadine for piercing healing
- not sleeping on the newly pierced part
- not attaching charms or other objects to the jewelry
It is very important to know that in the first period after getting a piercing, it might bleed, swell, cause burning, itching, or discomfort: this is all normal, the body simply needs to get used to the new piercing.
The secretion of a white/yellowish liquid is also absolutely normal: it is lymphatic secretion, a serum composed of blood plasma, lymph, and dead cells, and it means that the healing process is underway.
Piercings done in summer also require particular attention to sun and water: it is essential to avoid direct contact with pool water for the first 2 weeks (you can still go by covering the area with a waterproof bandage). You can submerge in seawater almost immediately, but it’s always better to rinse the area with fresh water for the first few days.
Those who have to leave for vacation right after getting a piercing must use high-protection sunscreen for sensitive skin around the area (not directly on the piercing) and cover the hole with a waterproof bandage if they want to swim. This practice should only be done for very short periods and must be followed immediately by a thorough shower under fresh water to clean the area and let it dry properly.
In summer, with humidity and heat at their peak, it is also fundamental to regularly clean the area around the new piercing to avoid the buildup of sweat and dirt, which can cause irritation and infection.
Also, remember to always carry a spare piece of jewelry: if the piercing unscrews, it must be replaced immediately to ensure the fresh hole doesn’t close up quickly.
What are the most requested and popular piercings in summer 2024
In this summer of 2024, there are some confirmations and new trends in piercings.
Among the most requested and popular, we certainly find the Navel piercing (belly button piercing), Nostril (piercing on the side cartilage of the nose), and Nipple Piercing.
Demand for ear piercings is growing, from smaller jewelry to more elaborate designs, such as the tragus piercing (jewelry on the part of cartilage in front of the ear canal), the Daith Piercing (piercing just above the ear canal, next to the tragus and the root), and the Helix Piercing (performed in the upper part of the auricle, on the hard edge of the ear).
The microdermal piercing remains very fashionable, a new practice that consists of applying a small piece of jewelry without piercing through the skin: the jewelry is “embedded” on the body, without passing from one side to the other like normal piercings.
The belly button piercing, located inside or around the navel, is back in the spotlight. Finally, among the timeless trends, we find the tongue piercing and the nipple piercing, which continue to be chosen by those who want something bolder and more fascinating that can also be hidden in summer.
What to do in case of infections of a piercing done in summer
Sometimes piercings can get a bit inflamed, especially if they are fresh or stressed. However, this is not an infection, and it is important to recognize the different body reactions to best help the hole heal.
In this case, for doubts and questions, it is always better to update your piercer.
Whether in summer or any other month of the year, it is really important to know how to recognize the signs of a piercing infection that has just been done, which can occur and spread very quickly.
Among these signs, those to monitor and be concerned about are:
- extensive and persistent redness and swelling in the piercing area
- intense and continuous pain
- heat
- pus discharge from the hole
- fever
When a piercing infection occurs, you must immediately contact the piercer who did the work.
However, everything can be resolved and nothing serious happens.
