{"id":4941,"date":"2019-05-28T11:26:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T09:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mts.addlab.net\/old-school-tattooing\/"},"modified":"2026-09-25T11:33:39","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T09:33:39","slug":"old-school-tattooing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mts.addlab.net\/en\/old-school-tattooing\/","title":{"rendered":"OLD SCHOOL TATTOOING"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>THE HISTORY<\/h2>\nOld School tattooing developed through the interaction between traditional Polynesian tattoo art and its influence on American sailors in the 1950s, becoming what we now know as the traditional tattoo.\n\nThe man considered the artist and creator of this style is <strong>Norman Keith Collins<\/strong>, who went down in tattoo history with the nickname <strong>Sailor Jerry.<\/strong> He was an innovator who transformed the ancient art of tattooing so completely that we can now divide it into two &#8220;eras&#8221;: <strong>pre<\/strong>-Sailor Jerry and <strong>post<\/strong>-Sailor Jerry.\n\nHis influence in this field was phenomenal; obviously, his greatest contribution was in design, despite being a major pioneer and innovator of the entire art form, from sterilization and improving needles to discovering new pigments.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13404 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mts.addlab.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/sailor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"285\">\n\n&nbsp;\n<!--more-->\nCollins was born in Reno, Nevada, but grew up in Northern California. In his late teens, he began traveling, and in the late 1920s, he met Tatts Thomas in Chicago, who taught him how to use a tattoo machine; he considers Thomas his first mentor.\n\nIt is said that during his time in Chicago, Thomas was the one who found him his first &#8220;guinea pigs&#8221; to tattoo, recruited from the city&#8217;s slums for a glass of wine.\n\n&nbsp;\n\nAt the age of 19, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He traveled by sea for several years before finally settling in the Hawaiian Islands, where he began his historic and legendary career as a tattoo artist by opening his tattoo shop, where he almost exclusively tattooed American sailors passing through the islands.\n\nThat&#8217;s why many of the subjects found in Old School tattoos relate to the sea and the world of sailing.\n\nSome examples:\n\nAnchors, sailing ships, mermaids, swallows, pin-ups, hearts, etc.\n\n&nbsp;\n<h2>SOME EXAMPLES<\/h2>\n&nbsp;\n\nThe <strong>anchor<\/strong> in tattooing represents <strong>safety<\/strong> and <strong>stability<\/strong>.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13405\" src=\"https:\/\/mts.addlab.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ancora.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"300\">\n\n&nbsp;\n\nThe <strong>eagle<\/strong> represents <strong>honor<\/strong>, <strong>prowess<\/strong>, <strong>courage<\/strong>, and <strong>intelligence<\/strong>.\n\nOne of the most common tattoos is the <strong>heart<\/strong>, which has always been a symbol of <strong>love<\/strong> and <strong>family<\/strong>. Sailors used it to keep their distant loved ones close during long voyages. \n\n&nbsp;\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13406\" src=\"https:\/\/mts.addlab.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/cuore.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\">\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marcolaritattoo\/\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marcolaritattoo\/<\/a>\n\n<strong> <\/strong>\n\nThe <strong>swallows <\/strong> are often associated with <strong>returning<\/strong>. This comes from their famous migration to warmer countries. \n\nIn the past, it was also believed that if a sailor died at sea, swallows (or birds in general) would carry his soul back home.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13407\" src=\"https:\/\/mts.addlab.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/rondine-291x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\">\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marthablek_tattooer\/\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marthablek_tattooer\/<\/a>\n\nIn the past, sailors used the stars as <strong>landmarks<\/strong> for navigation. This concept is also reflected in traditional tattooing: <strong>nautical stars<\/strong> are like <strong>guiding spirits<\/strong> and represent coming home. \n\nThe <strong>skull<\/strong>, besides symbolizing <strong>death<\/strong> and the <strong>fleeting nature<\/strong> <strong>of life<\/strong>, represents the various <strong>choices<\/strong> we make and their consequences.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13408\" src=\"https:\/\/mts.addlab.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ragno.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/davide_mstf\/\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/davide_mstf\/<\/a>\n\nMermaids and pin-ups: sailors would leave their loved ones and wives for months; to remember them and keep them close, they often asked for their portraits to be tattooed.
